Ten Of Pentacles
Wealth, financial security, family, long-term success, contribution.
Ten Of Wands
Burden, extra responsibility, hard work, completion
Each creature and character drawn on this Ten
Has their eyes in a different direction as ifFinancial security, long-term success
Can’t be bootstrapped alone (that American myth). And yet here’s a workhorse who struggles alone—
The only true beefcake the Tarot portrays.Head down, determined; he’s close, now, to home.
His burden is worth jumping into the fray.
Let’s go a little deeper.
As Tens, both these cards represent the ends of the journeys began by their respective Aces. For the Pentacles, which represent a focus on the material realm, the ending is a happy home, filled with success and abundance. For the Wands, representing focus on Will, the work is never done. The reward for good work is more work, and the destination is always a little bit off in the distance.
The way I’m reading this juxtaposition boils down to “community requires work.” The Ten of Pentacles calls The Creekmasons to truly allow for the possibility that collaborating on an MMBB or something similar will yield legitimate material success. The Ten of Wands reminds us that we will still need to “pull our own weight” in such an arrangement.
However, we might also consider that this spread comes with a warning. The Game A reaching and grasping hinted by the Ten of Wands’ character being frozen on this path forever, never quite reaching his destination, is reminiscent of the Buddhist Realm of Hungry Ghosts. Always consuming—always trying/driving/striving—and never fully satisfied.
I’m getting the message that success—as defined by membership in community, in a big family of Liminals—is achievable for the Creekmasons. On the other hand, if success is defined as “the full realization of our will’s desires,” it may be forever in the distance.
Still, as I said in the poem, this is the one buff character in the deck; if anyone is capable of bearing the weight of this responsibility, it’s him.
